How to Buy Rayon Consciously

Thanks to pressure from advocacy groups like Canopy, the viscose rayon industry is working to clean up its act. When shopping, look for lyocell or brand-name lyocell, known as Lenzing Tencel, as it’s the most sustainable type of viscose rayon, sourced from fast-growing eucalyptus trees (instead of endangered forests), and using careful chemical management that recycles substances rather than letting them out into the environment.45 You can also look for bluesign and Oeko-Tex safe-chemistry certifications on viscose rayon, bamboo, modal, or lyocell. There are efforts underway to make conventional viscose-rayon less environmentally damaging. Lenzing now makes a more sustainable viscose rayon, called EcoVero, as does Birla, and you can look for these brand names on your fabric label. Or shop with the dozens of brands partnering with Canopy, which is working to protect forests from the viscose rayon supply chain. You might also shop with brands that are members of the Forest Stewardship Council, a sustainable forest management group. There is also growing investment in viscose-rayon sources from recycled material and those that require no trees. For example, Lenzing’s Refibra is a type of lyocell made from recycled cotton scraps, as is Asahi Kasei’s Bemberg.
